What if AI crawlers are simply ignoring your website?

Silence does not always mean the site is invisible.

AI crawlers may visit without appearing in normal analytics. They may request robots.txt, HTML, JSON, public profiles, structured endpoints, or trust records directly from the server. The first job is separating “no evidence” from “no activity.”

Analytics gap

The crawler may not run your tracking code.

Many automated systems do not behave like human visitors inside a browser.

The site may not provide a strong discovery path.

A website can describe itself, but outside systems may still look for independent context.

The painful question is not only “Did a bot visit?”

The more important question is what the automated system found when it looked: a clear identity, a stable public record, current information, machine-readable signals, and enough evidence to reduce uncertainty—or just another isolated website making claims about itself.

02 / Evidence

Look for several layers of evidence.

One user-agent line is not enough. Stronger conclusions come from combining server activity, network identity, repeated observations, resource patterns, and public trust-state changes.

Claimed crawler
The request identifies itself as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Applebot, Googlebot, Amazonbot, PerplexityBot, or another known system.
BASIC SIGNAL
Network support
DNS, provider ranges, or source ownership support the claimed identity.
STRONGER
Request pattern
The system requests robots.txt, profiles, history, JSON, verification pages, or other machine-readable resources in a recognizable sequence.
CONTEXT
Repeated activity
The same system returns over time, checks for updates, or revisits a public record after state changes.
HIGH VALUE
03 / Interpretation

Do not turn crawler evidence into a claim it cannot support.

Honest reporting matters. A crawler request is useful evidence of automated interest, but it does not prove what happened after the request.

A bot request can show

  • An automated system discovered a resource
  • A public page or endpoint was requested
  • A crawler returned to check for changes
  • A domain or trust record was inspected

A bot request does not prove

  • The website was indexed
  • The domain was cited in an answer
  • The site was trusted or recommended
  • The content was used for model training

Reduce crawler uncertainty in four steps.

You cannot force outside systems to cite or rank the website. You can make the domain easier to discover, identify, verify, and inspect.

Check status codes, robots.txt, redirects, canonicals, sitemaps, and script-only content.

Make ownership, organization details, contact information, and site purpose obvious.

Use dates, sources, named authorship, original information, and stable public pages.
