HOPI

hopi, or moki (_moquis_), a tribe of north american indians of shoshonean stock. they are pueblo or town-building indians and occupy seven villages on three lofty plateaus of northern arizona. the first accounts of them date from the expedition of francisco vasquez de coronado in 1540. with the town-building indians of new mexico they were then subdued. they shared in the successful revolt of 1542, but again suffered defeat in 1586. in 1680, however, they made a successful revolt against the spaniards. they weave very fine blankets, make baskets and are expert potters and wood-carvers. their houses are built of stone set in mortar. their ceremonies are of an elaborate nature, and in the famous "snake-dance" the performers carry live rattlesnakes in their mouths. they number some 1600.
