(1900) 23,141. it is important as the centre of the flourishing cotton-spinning and weaving industries of the twente district; while by the railway via gronau and koesfeld to dortmund it is in direct communication with the westphalian coalfields. enschede possesses several churches, an industrial trade school, and a large park intended for the benefit of the working classes. about two-thirds of the town was burnt down in 1862.",
