CHARLEVOIX

charlevoix, a village and the county-seat of charlevoix county, michigan, u.s.a., 16 m. e.s.e. of petoskey, on lake michigan and pine lake, which are connected by pine river and round lake. pop. (1890) 1496; (1900) 2079; (1904) 2395; (1910) 2420. it is on the main line of the pere marquette railway, and during the summer season is served by lake steamers. the village is best known as a summer resort; it is built on bluffs and on a series of terraces rising from round and pine lakes and affording extensive views; and there are a number of attractive summer residences. charlevoix is an important hardwood lumber port, and the principal industries are the manufacture of lumber and of cement; fishing (especially for lake trout and white fish); the raising of sugar beets; and the manufacture of rustic and fancy wood-work. charlevoix was settled about 1866, and was incorporated as a village in 1879.
